Listen to the impact of cultural experiences.
LISTENING is an applied research methodology that investigates how cultural practices impact people, relationships, and social contexts.
Beyond the numbers, ESCUTA seeks to understand what was experienced, felt, and carried forward after the cultural experience.
Cultural impact cannot be measured solely in numbers.
Cultural practices can transform perceptions, open conversations, and mobilize people . Yet, their impact is often evaluated almost exclusively by reach metrics—audience, views, engagement.
These data indicate exposure, but say little about transformation .
More in-depth methodologies exist, but they tend to be expensive, time-consuming, and impractical.
LISTENING emerges to fill this void.
What is LISTENING?
LISTENING is an original research methodology applied to cultural impact. It starts from people's lived experiences to understand how cultural practices affect perceptions, cause shifts in meaning, and produce reverberations over time.
Its focus is not the cultural product itself, but what it triggers after enjoyment. The methodology was designed to be rigorous and feasible , producing consistent qualitative evidence at a lower cost, with less application time and without complex research structures.

Principles of the methodology
-
Impact is a process that happens in layers.
-
Affection is part of the impact.
-
Context influences experience.
-
Listen without judgment
-
Rigorous results combined with financial viability.
How ESCUTA understands cultural impact
Cultural impact is any significant change—subjective, relational, behavioral, collective, or institutional—that results from a cultural experience and its social circulation.
We hear:
from number to meaning
from the audience to the experience
from immediate measurement to what remains
Observed impact layers
Affective
Observe the emotions, sensations, and subjective resonances provoked by the cultural experience.
Behavioral (including intention)
It maps concrete actions or intentions to act triggered by cultural experience.
Cognitive (meaning and understanding)
It analyzes changes in the way the topic is understood, the reorganization of meanings, and new interpretations of reality.
Relational and collective
Assess whether the experience generates conversations, exchanges, encounters, or social interaction between people and groups.
Attitudinal
It identifies shifts in values, positions, and internal dispositions regarding the topic.
Institutional and structural
It observes the effects on institutional practices, agendas, policies, or decisions over time.
What is it used for:
-
Understanding how cultural practices (films, documentaries, exhibitions, museums, etc.) produce an impact.
-
Making visible effects that are made invisible by traditional metrics.
-
Supporting the connection between cultural impact and social change.
-
To produce evidence with rigor and practical feasibility.
-
Strengthening culture as an agent of social transformation.
About the creator:
LISTENING* is an original methodology created by Ana Castro, a researcher and PhD in Communication from ECA-USP, with over 25 years of experience in journalism, audiovisual media, and cultural impact. The methodology arises from the articulation between academic research, practice in the cultural field, and direct experience with audiovisual projects, social impact initiatives, and campaigns.
*LISTENING created by Ana Castro and registered as an intellectual work.
